ABSTRACT

Jan Mayen Island is located on the Jan Mayen Ridge, in the Norwegian Sea. As the only island in a vast area of sea, Jan Mayen has obvious continuing strategic importance but, in the post-Cold War environment, its potential control over resources within its EEZ is probably of greater importance. Of more obvious current relevance is the location of Jan Mayen in the centre of very rich fishing grounds. On 22 December 1976, Denmark declared a 200-nml fishing zone around Greenland, although this terminated at latitude 67N on the east coast, approximately the location of northern Iceland. On 29 May 1980, Norway declared a 200-nml fishing zone around Jan Mayen. However, in November 1997, the maritime boundary dispute between Norway, Greenland.
