ABSTRACT

Neutralization is not the only way to make a salt. Some metal chlorides, for example, are made by heating metals in a stream of chlorine. This is useful for making anhydrous chlorides, such as aluminum chloride or iron (ill) chloride, both of which are hydrolyzed by water so cannot be dehydrated by heating. Insoluble salts are conveniently prepared by ionic precipitation.
