ABSTRACT
World War II remains the most violent and destructive conflict in human history. What began as an essentially regional dispute in 1939 was transformed into a global war that culminated in the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan six years later. Over 50 million people were killed in the war, two-thirds of them civilians. In addition, the ideological conflict between the Axis and the Allies helped give the conflict its particularly violent character.
