ABSTRACT
The period from the start of the American Revolution in the 1770s to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 was a time of immense social, political, economic, and military change. The republican armies of the era opened up opportunities for those with talent, and one dominant theme was that of liberty and peoples right to self-government as free citizens of a new nation-state in arms.
