ABSTRACT
The shoreline of the Arabian Gulf is for most of its length low-lying; loose soft sand undulates inland, the height of its low ridges scarcely above the level of the salt marshes which lie between them. The marshes are treacherous; they have a hard salt crust in dry weather but underneath they remain a salty mush in which animals and vehicles can be irretrievably lost if they break through the crust.
