ABSTRACT

Gaff One of the lesser racecourses, especially on the chasing circuit. Gaff was originally used as a slang term for a fair, then for ‘any public place of amusement’. A verb ‘to gaff’, meant ‘to gamble’, hence the word ‘gaffer’. ‘Baluchi … has now won … more than £50,000 in win and place money – no mean feat considering he has been pounding round the gaffs for much of his career’ (Sporting Life 24 May 1990).
