ABSTRACT

The manpower strength of a Volksgrenadier division was nearly a third less than a 1939-era infantry division, with only 10,000 men compared to 16,300 men in the old type of unit. The frontline strength was badly hit, with the new divisions only having six infantry battalions, as opposed to nine infantry battalions in the earlier type of division. Improvements in firepower were made, however, with the new divisions on paper boasting more than 300 machine guns.
