The mass of living matter (plants and animals) within the oceans has several aspects that are of importance to a discussion of

For example, during late winter and early spring, the prevailing winds off the coast of California are from the north, thereby inducing westward, off-coast, movement of the surface waters. These are replaced by an upwelling of waters from depths of 600 to 900 feet. The rich plant nutrient salts that are brought up spread out to distances of 50 to 100 miles and permit the development of large plant populations, which, in turn, support large populations of fish.
