ABSTRACT
I am an arithmetic teacher at heart and from that point of view, I came away impressed with Partha Dasgupta’s extraordinary computational skill so long as he was dealing with letters, although he proved fallible when he confronted numbers. But a more important skill, vividly displayed in this paper, is his ability to construct highly stylized models representing hard and practical problems and to extract from them highly suggestive implications for social policy.
