Inchapter2,welistedsevenpresentlypressingissuesofforest policyintheUnitedStates:(1)howmuchlandtodevotetoforests, (2)howmuchforestlandtowithdrawfromtimberharvest,(3)by whatmethodstoharvestthetimberthatisharvested,(4)howbestto managethenationalforests,andinparticularhowbesttoharvestthe matureoldgrowthtimberfoundonmanyofthem,(5)howtoeconomicallyincreasetheoutputfromthenumeroussmallprivateforests,(6)whatenvironmentalconstraintsshouldbeplacedontimbergrowingandtimberharvest,and(7)whatconstraints,ifany, shouldbeplacedonforeigntradeinforestproducts.Wepointedout thatthesesevenissuesoverlappedtoadegree,andthatotherissues couldalsohavebeenlisted.Butthese,wethink,prettywellcover theforestpolicyfieldintheUnitedStatestoday.
