ABSTRACT

The objective of this research has been to develop a simulation model that will mimic the travel behavior of wilderness users under varying circumstances. This information is necessary, in combination with knowledge of users’ aversion to encountering other parties in the wilderness, in order to establish the optimal capacity of a wilderness area for recreation purposes. Our model is intended for managers of wilderness areas that are being subjected to mounting intensity of use. An evaluation of the effects of proposed management policies or practices can be conducted by simulated experiments, as it were, before the changes proposed are adopted.
