ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to analyze and measure the various contributions of Chile’s large-scale mining sector (the Gran Minería) 1 to the economic growth of the country. The previous chapter dealt with the history of relations between the foreign copper companies and the government, including the evolution of tax treatment and of the various policies of the government with respect to the copper sector. Here, we are concerned more with the economic consequences of these policies for the Chilean economy.
