ABSTRACT

The principal development measures for humid tropical lands that have been employed or permitted to operate by Latin American governments were reviewed in chapter 3. Here the performance of twenty-four projects (see map 3) is examined. The primary focus of all the projects is the exploitation of new land to generate production, employment, and a population shift toward tropical frontier areas, and all involve forest resources in terms of either systematic harvesting or disorganized destruction. The projects were selected as being representative of the principal procedures applied in new-land development since 1950, a range of ecological and locational situations, and a variety of institutional conditions. Each project is evaluated for the salient features that appear to have influenced its performance.
