ABSTRACT

A fairbanks newspaper carried a report early in 1961 on the departure of two city officials on a fund-raising expedition outside the state, which would have appeared incongruous to any but an Alaskan.

Federal "depressed area" aid for Fairbanks will be sought by two city officials in Washington next week. Leonard E. Whitfield, comptroller-treasurer, said he and Councilman Jack Wilbur will confer with Alaska's congressional delegation and Department of Commerce officials on the matter. Whitfield and Wilbur will visit the national capital after going to New York City, where with City Clerk Einar Tonseth they will sign $1,415,000 worth of municipal general obligation bonds. 1
