ABSTRACT

Against the backdrop of Chapter X, we may now turn to more detailed evidence on just how competitive alternatives have worked in practice, and what potential obstacles are posed by conflicts of interest in present or potential satellite organization, with special reference to vertical ties between users, suppliers, and owners of the satellite system. The possibility of still more radical changes along lines developed in the last chapter should not be ruled out. But whatever the validity of their major economic premises, the political hazards of any plans which require a basic restructuring of the industry underscore the continued need for research on the more modest conception that follows.
