HISTORICAL GROWTH OF AGRICULTURE AND WATER USE

Completion of the railroad between Buenos Aires and Mendoza in the mid-1880s ended over a century of virtual economic stagnation within Cuyo. The railroad made the large and rapidly expanding coastal market available to Cuyo's farmers and brought an influx of immigrants, who provided much of the labor for agricultural expansion. This agricultural expansion has continued, with only brief pauses, until the present.
