Dads and diagnosis

The roles of mums and dads have changed over the last few years as more and more women have returned to work. Generally, however, especially when the child is young, fathers are still more likely to be

out at work and thus have less daily contact with their child. This can mean that the process of coming to terms with the diagnosis can take the following pattern:

■ A lot of men will have high expectations, especially of their sons. If diagnosis happens in the early years of life, they are more likely to deny there is a problem for a longer period of time.
