ABSTRACT

Metaphors and similes inject magic and imagination in our language. We can turn people, feelings, happenings into something else, or devise fascinating and intriguing comparisons between even the most unlikely objects. Metaphors can be liberating and exciting when used innovatively but they can also reduce our words to the predictable and humdrum. Avoid overused lacklustre metaphors, fly in the ointment, and similes, flat as a pancake. Worst of all, are the mixed metaphors beloved by politicians and celebrities - such as I've kept my eye on the ball while exploring every avenue.
