‘Independent writing’: what do we mean?
Writing is about life, whether it is a letter to a relative, a note to the milk man, a job application or a list of what to get friends and family for Christmas. If we each were to put samples of our writing into a plastic bag and bury it in the garden, what a wonderful picture of life in the 21st century would eventually be communicated to future generations (if found). Writing through the ages bears out this fact. We know about history through the writers of the time. And we have only to read letters from soldiers during World War I to appreciate the potential power of writing, especially when it communicates from the heart.
