ABSTRACT

Pupils who have been diagnosed with fragile X exhibit a number of characteristics in common with other conditions, e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Development Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In order to understand the issues of fragile X within the framework of the inclusion agenda, the following statements should be taken into consideration: Inclusion is the recognition that all children have different abilities and experience and seeks to value and gain from those differences. It is not about the expectation or attempt to make everyone the same or behave in the same way. It involves the process of increasing the participation of students in and reducing their exclusion from, the cultures, curricula and communities of local schools. An inclusive culture is established when staff and governors work well together. Inclusive values are established when everyone has a philosophy of inclusion; the school strives to minimise discriminatory practices.
