ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses sensory sensitivities such as tactile sensitivity, sensitivity to pain, auditory sensitivity, visual sensitivity, taste and smell sensitivity for children affected with fragile X syndrome. Some pupils may be sensitive to and dislike some tactile experiences and have difficulties with the close proximity of other pupils when standing in lines, and being in crowded corridors. There may also be a tendency to react against standard hygiene routines. Boys with fragile X may have problems with visual sensitivity, and can be provided support by being aware of tactile problems of wearing glasses. Taste and smell may occupy the full attention of a pupil with fragile X, sometimes to the exclusion of all else. Support can be provided by being aware that pupils may wish to taste inedible objects, out of curiosity.
