ABSTRACT

Developing fine motor skills foundation Stage is to encourage gross motor activity: outdoor play, obstacle courses, play parks. Encourage participation in activities to develop hand skills: eye-hand co-ordination threading beads, pouring activities, steering a toy car, opening a zip and finger strengthening playdough, Plasticine activities. Practise letter formation in a multi-sensory way: again using large arm movements first, make large letters on the floor with skipping ropes for the pupil to walk around, starting and stopping at the right place and vocalising the movement; write with different media on a whiteboard, chalkboard. Alternative recording strategies may be necessary to consider alternative recording methods for pupils who find independent writing more difficult, for example, by: using a tape recorder to record stories which can then be transcribed by an adult. Scissor skills: Books containing imaginative ideas, e.g. Cutting Skills from LDA, could be used to extend cutting skills.
