ABSTRACT

Pupils may feel frustrated or unhappy, but may not know why, or may not be able to verbalise their feelings. It provides some issues that may be: the inability to form friendships; teasing, bullying; the inability to progress at the same rate as their peers. Strategies to support emotional issues: ensure members of staff are aware of the implications of fragile X syndrome and that adequate information is shared. Give reassurance to the pupil that he/she will be supported to solve the problems that are identified. Make time to observe the pupil in various situations in order to identify possible difficulties in specific situations. Employ strategies to foster a positive self-image. Use circle time to allow issues to be raised. It also ensures the members of staff are aware that feelings of anxiety, e.g. related to change in routine, may impact on the pupils ability to access the curriculum and that a pupil may exhibit certain behaviours related to this.
