ABSTRACT

Support staff facilitate the delivery of an appropriately differentiated curriculum under the direction of the teacher. It should work under the direction of the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), class teacher or individual subject teachers. Liaison procedures between home and school should be established under the guidance of the SENCO, head of year, class teacher or form tutor. It ensures time for liaison between teachers and support staff, so that planning to meet the pupils needs can take place. In practical sessions when a pupil needs help to manipulate specialised equipment, support staff should work under the direction of the pupil whenever possible. Position support staff within the classroom in order to minimise distraction from the teacher, encouraging the pupil to focus on the teacher rather than on support staff. Recognise that the ultimate responsibility for the pupil's access to the curriculum is that of the class teacher. Not all pupils with fragile X will require additional adult support.
