ABSTRACT

The cognitive functioning of pupils with fragile X is varied; some fall within the normal range but the majority have a moderate learning difficulty and some have a more severe learning difficulty. There are relative strengths and weaknesses in the learning profile, which should be taken into consideration. Relative strengths are good imitation skills both verbal and practical and good visual memory, good visual learner. They have good long-term memory, enabling pupils to learn facts about topics of personal interest and difficulties for avoidance of eye contact. Difficulty responding to verbal input. Strategies for teaching: Demonstrate a task, e.g. a craft activity for the pupil to copy and use a whole-word method when teaching reading in place of a phonic approach. It gives adult support and/or alternative activities in the Numeracy Strategy. Support by encouraging personal organisation systems at home/school to ensure PE equipment, etc. is brought on the correct day.
