ABSTRACT

Pupils with fragile X may exhibit behaviours that are linked to anxiety caused by new or challenging situations. It may be possible to create a learning environment that helps to address the pupil's needs. Strategies to support the learning environment are to use visual timetables to structure the day to suit the age and stage of the development of the pupil: place the pictures/symbols onto a strip of card with Blu-Tack or self-fastening Velcro remove as the activity is completed and use a trusted member of staff to support potentially difficult situations, e.g. the start of new class or visits by a theatre group. The learning environment strategies supports try to identify what is causing anxiety through observation of the pupil. It may be possible to change things or offer extra support. Learning self-calming methods when levels of anxiety are felt to be rising through deep breathing, listening to music, etc. would be advantageous.
