Introduction

Glue ear tends to be a fluctuating problem, meaning that sometimes the child may hear better than at others. One month the child may function well and the next be very poorly; this is very confusing to parents and other adults working with the child, as behaviour and reactions tend to change rapidly. The condition and people's responses to sufferers both during and after bouts can be very disruptive indeed in terms of a child's self-perception, emotional development and education. No wonder children look confused when people shout at them, telling them to attend and concentrate harder as they had done in the previous week!
