ABSTRACT

Trying to leave poverty behind and find good jobs and prosperity in a new place, many migrants take terrible risks on the journey and find a cold welcome if they survive and arrive. Although wealthier countries need immigrant workers, they do not usually treat them well. Newcomers are accused of stealing jobs even as their work contributes to economic growth. If these problem can be overcome, there is much evidence – not least from the US experience – that economies flourish and cultures benefit from the diversity that immigration brings.
