ABSTRACT

There is inequality everywhere. The income of the richest 1 percent of the world’s population is equal to the income of the poorest 57 percent. Many people in rich countries live in great poverty, while some people in poor countries live in great wealth. Other kinds of inequality – in power, access to education, recognition of the rights of different groups – are often built on top of the basic income inequity. Measuring the latter thus offers an indication of some of the other potential divisions in a society.
