In addition the team initiated thought and debate on some widespread beliefs about the natural resources situation in Guinea. For example, the team raised the following questions:
• Is erosion in the Fouta Djallon highlands as massive as everyone had been led to believe, to the extent that downstream river systems are affected (Senegal, Gambia and part of the Niger River)? The team expressed serious doubts with respect to this assumption, in light of the fact that erosion in the Fouta Djallon has never been systematically observed or scientifically measured. Vast amounts of funding are provided to that region in the form of projects intended to combat erosion.
