Initial Development

In deciding on the focus for the Zambia NCS, a significant factor was the establishment of IUCN's Conservation for Development Centre (CDC), with its priority of reorienting national development policy and planning processes towards what was becoming known as sustainable development. CDC provided technical assistance for this purpose to governments in developing countries. In Zambia an IUCN consultant assisted during the preparation of the strategy document for a period of six months; later, several long-term consultants assisted during the NCS approval and early implementation phases and acted as secretaries of the National Conservation Committee, a precursor to the eventual Environment Council of Zambia.
