ABSTRACT

The suggestion that we bear collective responsibility for environmental problems has almost become an axiom of modern life. However, it is a proposition that is rarely examined closely, free from rhetoric and moral opprobrium. In Chapters Three and Four we explored global economic relations and their environmental impact. The idea has gained currency that the solution to environmental problems lies at the global scale, where more and more 'problems' seem to lie. Global problems, runs the argument, require global solutions, which must begin with a distinct moral purpose and political resolution.
