ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 then takes a more formal look at the most important treerelated technologies which have been or could be employed in the great diversity of African land management environments. These are the technical options or tools for improving rural tree growing and management for multiple benefits or for overcoming the more serious local constraints. While we do not advocate a technical package or "tool kit" approach - since technical thinking alone misses most of what is important about rural livelihood systems - it makes sense that, whatever the ecological or socio-economic conditions, the technical package is a good one. Indeed, it should be the best that collaborative research and development (between outside researchers and development practitioners, and local people using "popular science") can come up with.
