ABSTRACT

Underlying public concern about all things nuclear are issues of health and safety; and underlying those are the hazards of radiation. In practice, the amount of radioactivity in many consignments of radioactive material – radioisotopes in particular – is relatively small, if not minuscule. By contrast, other shipments, for example spent fuel, contain millions of becquerels of radioactivity. Hence the concern that radioactive materials in transit might be a health hazard for people close to the transport routes.
