ABSTRACT

Without coordination and a proper policy context, or at least a clear sense of direction, the quest for one kind of sustainability can be negated by the quest for another kind. For example, low-cost waste disposal may, by reducing public expenditure, make a community more economically sustainable, at least in the short term. It may also detract from environmental sustainability - and, in the longer term, from economic sustainability - as the community later faces the costs of cleaning up the disposal facilities.
