ABSTRACT

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas is established as a governing body and meets annually, usually in November. The Commission, on the basis of scientific evidence, makes recommendations for the maintenance of the populations of tunas and tuna-like fish. To co-operate in maintaining the population of tunas and tuna-like species found in the Atlantic Ocean and the adjacent seas at levels that will permit the maximum sustainable catch for food and other purposes. The Commission shall be responsible for the study of populations of tunas and tuna-like fishes and such other species exploited in tuna fishing in the Convention area as are not under investigation by another international fishery organization. If the Commission considers it necessary, it recommends to the Parties regulatory measures to ensure maximum utilization of the populations of fish. Such regulatory measures may include a minimum and/or maximum size of fish which may be caught, restrictions on the amount of catch and/or effort.
