ABSTRACT

In fulfilling its aims to combat poverty and malnutrition, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) carries out four major functions. It collects, analyses, and disseminates information; advises governments on policies and programmes; provides technical assistance; and offers governments and experts a neutral forum in which to meet to discuss issues related to food and agriculture. The major areas of FAO activity are: crop production, livestock, natural resources, research and technology, rural development, nutrition, food and agricultural policy, fisheries, and forestry. The Organization has intensified its interdisciplinary work to ensure the integration of environmental considerations in all FAO activities, giving high priority to the prevention of environmental degradation and emphasizing sustainable development in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. The FAO Council is assisted by eight major committees covering agriculture; commodity problems; constitutional and legal matters; forestry; fisheries; world food security; finance; and FAO programmes.
