ABSTRACT

An important function of International Maritime Organization (IMO) is to facilitate technical co-operation within the scope of the Organization. The IMO Assembly is the supreme governing body and meets biennially. It is open to all member States as well as representatives of the intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO. The Council normally meets twice a year and acts as the governing body of IMO between sessions of the Assembly. Contributions to the IMO budget are based on a formula which is different from that used in other United Nations agencies. Financial support for IMO projects is provided in various ways. IMO’s Technical Co-operation Programme, with a total delivery of $US5.4 million in 1994, $7.7 million in 1995, and $5.9 million in 1996, has until 1997 been funded not from IMO’s own resources, but mainly from the UN Development Programme.
