ABSTRACT

To administer the system of additional compensation created under the International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage 1971. To administer the regime of compensation created under the 1971 Fund Convention as amended by the 1992 Protocol thereto, known as the International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage 1992. The major activities at the 1971 and 1992 Funds are: to administer the system of compensation established under the 1971 Fund Convention and 1992 Fund Convention, and to handle claims for compensation arising out of oil pollution incidents and pay compensation to victims. Each Fund is financed by contributions of persons who receive more than 150,000 tonnes of crude or heavy fuel oil after sea transport in a member State during a calendar year. Contributions are determined in proportion to the quantity of oil received.
