ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to promote the sharing with non-member States of the environmental management expertise, information, and experience that reside in member States of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It shows that the views and expertise of private-sector institutions are drawn upon in the conduct of OECD’s environmental work. The chapter utilizes the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD. The supreme body of the OECD is its Council, composed of one representative from each member State. The major part of the OECD’s work is, however, prepared and carried out by numerous specialized committees and working parties. The Environment Directorate works closely with many other bodies, particularly those of the UN and the European Community—as well as other sectoral directorates in OECD. The Environmental Policy Committee, which is composed of high-level government officials, is serviced by the Environment Directorate.
