ABSTRACT

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has three main programme areas: reproductive health, including family planning and sexual health; population and development strategy; and advocacy. In reproductive health, UNFPA supports the provision of a wide range of family-planning methods and related information within a constellation of integrated services, which also includes, among others: safe motherhood; counselling; and prevention of infertility, abortion, reproductive tract infections, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV-AIDS. UNFPA adopted policy guidelines on population and environment in 1989 to promote the integration of environmental concerns into population activities. In line with these guidelines and Agenda 21, UNFPA supports a range of projects dealing with the impact on the environment and vice versa of population factors such as growth, distribution, age structure, and migration in particular. As an integral part of the implementation of the Programme of Action, UNFPA will take new initiatives in many fields, including the field of population and environment.
