ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Strategy for Health and Environment is an organization-wide action plan for the programmes for the Promotion of Environmental Health (PEH) and Promotion of Chemical Safety (PCS). The objectives of the PEH are: to serve as the lead programme for implementing WHO’s Global Strategy for Health and Environment and to devise and co-ordinate the organization’s contribution to international programmes relating to major environmental factors. All member States of the UN may become members of WHO by accepting its Constitution. The Ninth General Programme of Work, covering the period 1996–2001, defines the policy framework for world action and sets the framework for programme development and management for WHO itself during that period. The WHO programmes for PEH and PCS will address priority issues concerning the physical and social environments. In addition to regular funding through assessed contributions, WHO operates on extra-budgetary resources, which amounted to $1,087 billion for 1996–1997.
