ABSTRACT

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) works through its members to provide authoritative scientific measurements, as well as assessments and predictions of the state of the global atmosphere and of the Earth’s freshwater resources. WMO carries out its work through eight major scientific and technical programmes which have strong components in each region: the World Weather Watch Programme, World Climate Programme, Hydrology and Water Resource Programme, Education and Training Programme, Regional Programme, and Technical Co-operation Programme. The WMO promotes increasingly effective application of meteorological and hydrological information in seeking environmentally sound and sustainable development. WMO, through its members and their national Meteorological and Hydrological Services, and in co-operation with other UN agencies and international organizations, is contributing to disaster preparedness and mitigation by means of prediction and warnings. In addition to the extra-budgetary funds for activities in respect of technical co-operation projects, WMO administers several trust funds and special accounts financed by various member States and international organizations.
