ABSTRACT
Our view of science has been dominated by a prejudice: the philosophy of science has been taken to mean the philosophy of lab science. Field-oriented sciences, insofar as they have been considered at all, have been viewed as merely an inferior form of what properly happens in the laboratory. This is an epistemological error rife with social and political consequences, for the mineral world is best approached in situ.
