ABSTRACT
A particular focus of the sustainability debate has been that the criterion of sustainability should be that present consumption levels should not constrain those of future generations. At the centre of the argument is a concern for the distribution of the benefits of economic development between different time periods, which reflects a preexisting interest in the distribution of income within time periods.
