The New Barons

Large Farmers At the farm level, the chief beneficiaries have been the large intensive farms, though different countries have different structures and therefore the beneficiaries are characterized slightly differently in each country. In the US, it is the corporate farms which have done best out of the intensification process; in the UK, it is the large grain barons; in Greece it may be the professional leaders of farmers organisations. Nevertheless, because the majority of farm support programmes are linked to produc tion, those with the biggest farms have inevitably received the lion’s share of payments, although, in comparison with smaller farmers, subsidies may make up a smaller proportion of their income.
