The Real Agenda: GATT and Biotechnology

The piecemeal approach of governments to the problems of industrial agriculture reflects a reluctance to address the deeper structural issues at stake. Explicitly or implicitly, large farming interests and the agrochemical industry are looking towards the development of a “two-track” agricultu­ ral system in Europe and elsewhere, with large farmers producing the bulk of the food, using industrial methods and making their way, by and large, in the open market, and smaller producers kept in farming through environmental and social grants.
