chapter  6
Forest plantations: towards sustainable practice
Pages 35

Plantation forestry is, with a few notable exceptions, a relatively recent form of land use; most plantation forests have been established in the past fifty years. Nevertheless, a wealth of experience has accumulated over this period. Our purposes in this chapter are to describe the economic, environmental and social roles of plantation forestry; to synthesize relevant scientific and technical experience as a guide to best practice; and finally to suggest the research and development priorities to ensure that plantations will contribute to sustainable development in the future.
