ABSTRACT

As i had suspected, since Tuk Tuk had been built as a stopping place for Westerners there were no traditional midwives living nearby. Asking around about this, however, I did have a very interesting discussion with Mark, the son of our losman (guesthouse) owner. He was married to a teacher on the mainland, where she worked during the week while he stayed with his father, helping out in the restaurant and looking after the children. He certainly seemed to be very involved with them, as nearly every time I saw him he was either carrying the youngest one around or playing with the older one.
