ABSTRACT

The name “Toraja” means “men of the mountains” and was given to the people who lived in the central highlands of Sulawesi by the lowland dwellers of this island. During the Dutch rule of Indonesia this peculiarly shaped island was called Celebes, and its main town, Makassar, was for many years an important centre of the spice trade. To get there from Sumatra had taken us a long three days by boat.
